BITTERSWEET MYSTERY
Doesn’t time go fast
Or is it my imagination?
Was it meant to last
Or did the train pass through the station?
Why am I standing here
Feeling oh so cold and all alone
So very far from home?
Walking hand in hand
Searching for the deeper meaning
But did we understand
The thoughts that sent our hearts careening
Body chemistry
Kisses in a dark and secret place
I won’t forget your face
Summer came – we stepped out in the shade
What became of all the plans and promises we made?
Nothing seemed to change
Yet nothing seemed to stay the same
Life was weird and strange
Playing with our lives was just a game
We’d dance the night away
And talk of love until the morning sun
Crept up to spoil our fun!
Did it have to end?
Did you have to go and leave me?
My heart will never mend
The thought of you won’t fade believe me
Like petals in a bowl
Each time their scent brings back your memory
Bittersweet mystery – bittersweet mystery

PAPER ROUND
The day that Eddie Cochran died
I put the news through every door
What life and death meant to me then
I wasn’t really sure
But as I cycled round the city
I heard rock ‘n’ roll in every sound
I could have been a teenage idol
But I had – but I had a
Paper round, paper round
I never let it get me down
All the dreams I never found
After the paper round
I know that I daydreamed a lot
An invisible hand I held
Dreams like winning Wimbledon
And dating Tuesday Weld
To take Anne Digby to the pictures
Only cost me half a crown
And I’d have been Kirk Douglas
But I had – but I had a
Paper round, paper round …
Nothing I see convinces me
That the world’s not falling apart
I could tell you stories that would
Surely break your heart
They never taught me how to tell the lies
They never said I’d have to compromise
Just to get on without the
Paper round, paper round…
I’m too old to be a paper boy
Too young to be a lollypop man
I’ve got my shoulder to the wheel
And I’m doing what I can
But as the dreams hit heavy weather
And slowly ran aground
If you never got the grades
You can blame – you can blame that
Paper round, paper round …
After the paper – the
Paper round, paper round…

MORE THAN THIS
You come along and you take control
I think I’d follow you anywhere
If I’m in danger of losing my soul
I don’t know where we’re going – I don’t even care
I get the shivers when you’re close to me
What’s that look you’ve got in your eyes?
Is this the way that it’s supposed to be
And does it really matter if we realise
That there ain’t no way you can get enough spark
From a moonlit night or a fumble in the dark
You don’t get fire from a little kiss
This ain’t love – love is more than this – uh-oh
This ain’t love – love is more than this
I get nervous when you hold me tight
I feel your body so close to me
But don’t expect me to put up a fight
When I’m standing on the edge of discovery
But there ain’t…
It’s nothing more than a casual affair
We know exactly where we’re coming from
This interlude honey we both share
Is the best fun you get with your clothes still on
Oh there ain’t…
No there ain’t…more than this
This ain’t love – love is more – than this.

CLOSER TO YOU
I’ve got this feeling and it’s tugging at my heart
I get this feeling every time that we’re apart
I’ve got this feeling and it’s running through my soul
I’ve got this feeling I’m about to lose control
I lie in my bed at night and wonder
Could this be some kind of magic spell
You put me under
I’ve got this feeling and it’s pounding in my brain
I get this feeling and it’s driving me insane
I’ve got this feeling it’s been bugging me all day
I’ve got this feeling and it just won’t go away
I lie in my bed and wonder whether
There’ll be an end to time we spend together
Why do I say the things I say
Why do I do what I do
Why is it hard to find my way
I’m just trying to get closer to you
Why can’t I find the words to tell you how I feel
I need to hold you just to know that you are real
I’ve got a feeling I’m about to cross the line
I’ve got this feeling everything will be just fine
I’ve got this feeling and sometimes it gets too much
I get this feeling when you’re close enough to touch
I lie in my bed and think about you
All of the sleepless nights that I’m without you
Why do I say the things I say
Why do I do what I do
Why is it hard to find my way
I’m just trying to get closer to you

DON’T GIVE ME YOUR NUMBER
Don’t give me your number if you don’t want me to call
I can’t take this silence any more
You’re the one who pays the piper
And the one who picks the tune
Just tell me what the game is
And the stakes we’re playing for
Don’t give me an answer before the question’s asked
Then turn around and say you’ve changed your mind
And please don’t build my hopes too high
If you mean to cut me down
Break it to me gently there’s no need to be unkind
Patience is a virtue but I’ve never been a saint
And I feel you’ve kept me waiting much too long
Lovers don’t need promises they only need the truth
And I believe it’s worth the risk
No matter if we’re wrong, so
Don’t give me your number if you don’t want me to call
Seems to me that I’m just wasting time
But every time the phone goes dead
Means one more time I’ll try
I want you to realise that I’m still on the line
I want you to realise that I’m still on the line

HITTING THE GROUND RUNNING
I got your call this morning
Suddenly the clouds just rolled away
Feels good – the sun is shining
Must have been something you had to say
It’s been a long time coming
I don’t know where we went wrong
I got your call this morning
When I heard your voice come down the line
Feels good anticipating
Must have done something to change your mind
Let’s talk about it later
I don’t want to wait too long
I’m hitting the ground running
This time we’re gonna start anew
I’m hitting the ground running
A man’s gotta do what a man’s gotta do
I’m hitting the ground running
I swear I’m gonna be so true
I’m hitting the ground running
Running back home to you
I got your call this morning
You could’a knocked me out of my shoes
Today’s when I start living
Must have done something to get such news
Can’t wait to come on over
I know my love still burns strong
I’m hitting the ground running…
The day you left was a slap in the face
Made my life so incomplete
I get your call and I touch base
You set me on my feet
I’ve got to come on over
I want you to just hold on
I’m hitting the ground running…so true
I’m hitting the ground running
Hitting the ground – running back home
Hitting the ground – running back home
Hitting the ground – running back home to you.

LOVE AND HOW TO CURE IT
You’ve got the shivers and you’ve got the shakes
You think you can’t endure it
But let me tell you baby you’re in love
And I know how to cure it
Why don’t you let me stay for the night
There’s nothing there in the dark
That isn’t there in the light
And if you’re scared
I’ll be there by your side
But will you respect me in the morning?
You’ve got the shivers…
We wanted each other right from the start
There’s nothing there in the eyes
That isn’t there in the heart
But if you’re scared
We won’t even start
‘cos you won’t respect me in the morning
You’ve got the shivers…
You’re just a little bit lovesick
And girl I’ve got the remedy
Your heart is racing – your fever’s high
So baby come on over to me
Why don’t you let me stay for the night
There’s nothing there in the dark
That isn’t there in the light
And if you’re scared
I’ll be there by your side
But will you respect me in the morning?
You’ve got the shivers…
And I know how to cure it
And I know how to cure it.

THE TRICK
The trick is not to care too much
Love is where you find it
The trick is not to care too much
And never mind
You’ve got nothing left to lose
But your fear of falling
Better to have loved and lost
Than not at all
The chance of a lifetime
Is staring you in the face
If you love her and you lose her
It’s surely no disgrace
But I would love her
If I were in your place
Don’t be afraid to take a chance
You could easily lose it
There’s nothing shaking but your pride
Only you can chose
Love may come and love may go
Never look behind you
Pretty soon you’re bound to know
That love’s unkind
The trick is not to care too much
Love is where you find it
Here today – tomorrow gone
And never mind
The chance of a lifetime…

SHE NEVER THINKS ABOUT HIM
When their eyes first met they fell in love
Fitted together like hand and glove
It was a meeting of hearts and minds
Strange how the story of love unwinds
He told her he’d never let her go
She said she loved him so
He wanted her always to have and to hold
But she was feeling her love grow cold
He saw the start of a golden age
She saw the bars of a gilded cage
He would have given her anything
He even bought the ring
And in his mind he can’t let go
To the memory he can’t say no
But she never thinks about him
No she never thinks about him
She never wanted to break his heart
Somehow for her it just fell apart
It wasn’t easy to let him down
She’d start again in another town
One day he woke to a winter’s dawn
She’d packed her bags and gone
And in his mind he can’t let go
To the memory he can’t say no
But she never thinks about him
No she never thinks about him anymore
She never thinks about him
No she never thinks about him
He can’t believe how it all panned out
He thought that he had it all planned out
And so one day in the pouring rain
He went and boarded a southbound train
He stood around in the empty street
Hoped against hope that they both would meet
He saw the ruins of hopes and years
Through falling bitter tears
And in his mind…

NOTHING TO SAY
I’ve got nothing to say
Who’s gonna to listen to me anyway
I’m in a world of my own
Don’t have a mailbox – don’t have a phone
What I’ve got is no disease
I just live the life I please
Tried writing things down
Searching for feelings – none to be found
No story to tell
Thanks for the letter – hope you are well
Hear the ticking of the clock
If I could just get past this block
When you were younger, what did you do?
You let your elders speak for you
Some people seem to chatter on all day
Maybe they just talk their lives away
Doesn’t really matter what they say
They make you feel so stupid anyway
Hey – thought we were friends
This understanding – it never ends
Hey – thought we were birds
Communication doesn’t need words
Thought of dropping you a line
Wife and kids are doing fine
If there’s something more inside
I can’t find it though I’ve tried
I’ve got nothing to say……

I HAVE TO SET IT DOWN AGAIN
I don’t know why I can’t take any more
I hate to leave but still somehow I must
I don’t know why I can’t walk out that door
When everything we had has turned to dust
We walked together down that road
We struggled on beneath the load
Now time has bent my body
And I have to set it down again
I made the choice why is it hard to go?
And who are you to tell me if I’m wrong?
Don’t look tome for answers – I don’t know
To talk about it now would take too long
Our love foundations that we laid
Are punchlines for the games we played
Something has come between us
And I have to set it down again
How can I go on this way
Knowing the hurt that I caused you
And after all we can’t both live a lie
Please don’t you cry
Maybe it’s the best thing we can do
I don’t know why it took you by surprise
You always had those questions in your heart
I don’t know how to make you realise
That everything we promised fell apart
It won’t be easy to forget
There’ll be some pain and some regret
I’m sad to say it’s over
But I have to set it down again

SO VERY YOUNG
We were oh so very young
We thought that nothing would endure
We searched for pleasure, but not to treasure
We liked to take our pleasure pure
We climbed the ladder to the highest rung
We were oh so very young
We were oh so very wild
We knew that nothing lasts for long
Not forever, never never
Least now we know we were not wrong
We look each moment as the heavens smiled
We were oh so very wild
We were oh so very bored
With lessons and with schools
They tried to teach us, couldn’t reach us
They wondered why we broke their rules
We gave them more time than we could afford
We were oh so very bored
We were oh so very young
And that’s a fine excuse
That was yesterday, I do my best today
But still I wonder what’s the use
The songs don’t live at all until they’re sung
The way they were when we were young
And I had a dream
That we were just as young
As we were then
And that we fell in love
All over again

ABOUT TIME
It’s about time you realised
It’s about time don’t be surprised
I’m walking tightropes unsupervised
It’s about time there is no doubt
It’s about time’s what it’s about
I’m running in as it’s running out
…………..About time
About time
Get it all together
About time
Between now and forever
I wish I may I wish I might
Sing this song for you tonight
I was wrong and you were right
About time
Now I don’t miss trains or aeroplanes
Double six or double two
The only thing I ever missed was you
(And that was just bad timing!)
Into the black hole
Where we let the good times roll
It’s about time so don’t be scared
It’s about time the soul was bared
I’m in the spotlight unprepared
It’s about time I think you knew
It’s about time for me and you
Now I’m learning that’s what love will do
…………..About time
About time
Get it all together
About time
Between now and forever
I wish I may I wish I might
Sing this song for you tonight
I was wrong and you were right
About time
(As someone said From Gilead – It’s about time!)
